Blood Sweat & Gold


The filthy old-timer panning next to Willie bled into the river. His blood was a deep crimson, but the bit that dripped onto his dusty shirt evolved into a black spatter when it mingled with that grime. Streaks of sweat made clean marks down his forehead where it washed away the buildup.

“Your nose is bleeding, old man.” Willie had barely looked up at him to see where all that red in the river had come from.

The line of men stretched beyond the hill.

The old man wiped his nose and dipped his pan back into the river.
